There is an event that we just can
describe as one of the most memorable moment in our life. The event that we had
attended was a talk on Cervical Cancer Awareness which was organized by the
In-Smartive Club. We could experience a lot of knowledge about cancer. The
reason of the event was held to increase the awareness of cervical cancer among
University students.
The event was held at WDK-01, Blok W
on the 2nd October 2013. It started at eight and end at eleven, but
on that evening we arrived a little bit late. There were a group of people who
joined the talk. The talk on cervical cancer was given by Dr. Nor Huda Binti
Mat Ali, a Clinical O&G Specialist from Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan,
(HTAA), Kuantan. She was wearing an orange scarf with a matching blouse on that
night.
The event started with doa
recitation. Then, the emcee greeted the speaker on the stage. She introduced
herself and started to give a talk on the awareness of cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer is a killer without alarm. Every 4 minutes, one person in Asian
country will die because of this cancer. It occurs when abnormal cell on the
cervix grow out of control. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that
opens into vagina. Then, she told that cervical cancer can successfully treated
when it’s found early. It is usually found at a very early stage through a PAP
test.
The audiences were very curious about
this cancer. So one of them raised up her hand and asked Dr. Nor Huda what is
the causes of cervical cancer. Then, she replied that most cervical cancer is
caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). You can get the HPV by
having sexual contact with someone who has it. But not all types of HPV can
caused cervical cancer. You can have HPV for years and not know it. It stays in
your body and can lead to a cervical cancer years after you were infected. She
encouraged us to have a regular PAP tests because it can find changes in
cervical cell before they turned into cancer and preventing cervical cancer.
From the talk, we could get a lot of
knowledge about the symptoms when this cancer occurs in our body. The symptoms
of cervical cancer may include the bleeding of vagina or changes in menstrual
cycle. Then, you can have pain during sex, bleeding when something comes in
contact with your cervix and vaginal discharge that is tinged with blood.
Lastly, Dr. Nor Huda explained
specifically how these cancer can be treated by surgery such as hysterectomy,
chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The participants, were advised to take
prevention when something happened in future. She suggested that if we are
below 26, we can get the HPV vaccine other than PAP test.
